RevOps and Data

The top 10% of sellers close 47.4% of revenue. Nobody can copy them because nobody wrote it down.

Salesloft asked 500 US revenue leaders what is holding their AI back, and the answer they gave without meaning to is that more than half the record it reads is one seller's memory.
September 9, 2026

Salesloft published its 2026 US Revenue Benchmark on 2 September. Censuswide fielded it between 28 May and 10 June among 500 US revenue decision makers, chief revenue officers, chief sales officers and revenue operations leaders at companies with 200 or more employees. Every one of them uses AI somewhere in the revenue process, and only 20.6% call their AI strategy production ready with measurable outcomes.

The trade press read that as a maturity gap. Further down its own release, Salesloft supplies a better explanation: 55.6% say the information entered into their CRM is based mostly on subjective seller reporting.

The release runs the two findings in a single sentence, the second half quietly cancelling the first. That is not a maturity problem. It is an input problem, and no model fixes it.

84% capture loss reasons. 32% can say why a deal stalled.

Both numbers come from the same survey. 84% say loss reasons are captured often or always. About 32% can instantly diagnose why a deal has stalled, 41% are slow to work it out, and 27% can see win and loss rates but cannot explain what happens between stages.

A field got filled in. Nothing was learned.

So the account of why revenue is won and lost gets written by the person who lost it, after the fact, from memory, into a dropdown that operations built last year. Then the machine reads it and tells you where to put your quarter.

89% believe the evaluation is objective

89% of the same respondents believe managers assess seller performance objectively. They also said more than half the underlying record is seller opinion. Objective judgment, subjective evidence.

Validity's State of CRM Data Management in 2026, published 25 August from 500 marketing professionals across five countries, prices that gap. 78% of C suite respondents say they acted on an AI recommendation they later suspected was wrong because of bad data. 67% of C suite respondents acknowledge campaign data is sometimes manipulated to look better to leadership, against 38% across the wider organization. The people furthest from the keyboard are the most confident and the most misled.

The top 10% close 47.4% and nobody can copy them

The Salesloft figure that should worry a CRO is 47.4%, the share of closed won revenue produced by the top 10% of sellers, while average quota attainment sits near 62%.

Every RevOps team has been asked to find out what those people do differently and teach it to everyone else. They cannot, because the answer is not in the system. 37.6% of leaders named updating CRM records as their most frequently cited administrative bottleneck, and 31.4% called sellers losing time to manual CRM administration the single greatest barrier to pipeline generation. Read that as a confession: the record is a tax, and the best reps pay it last and least. Salesforce's State of Sales, 4,050 professionals across 22 countries, found the average seller spends 40% of their time selling. Writing up the other 60% is the first thing a good quarter pushes off the calendar.

The model never gets to read the room

AI went straight to the part of selling that was already written down. Emails, sequences, transcripts, pipeline fields. It is good there, which is why adoption hit every team in the survey.

It has nothing to work with from the dinner, the booth conversation, or the ten minutes in the hallway after the panel. Ask a revenue operations lead what survives those conversations and the answer is a calendar entry and a name. The substance does not reach the CRM, and when the rep leaves, the relationships leave with them. In-person is the last channel in B2B with no instrumentation on it, so it never shows up in a loss reason, never shows up in a coaching plan, and never shows up in the training data. We made a version of this argument last week about prospecting channels, where the methods that generate no click kept outperforming the ones that generate nothing else.

Consolidation will not solve it either. 26% of the teams surveyed are actively consolidating their revenue technology and another 32.6% are evaluating where it makes sense. Fewer systems holding the same recollections is a tidier way to be wrong.

Production ready AI is not one model away, it is one input away, and the 20.6% will not move until the record changes. Any revenue team that reports measurable AI outcomes twelve months from now will have got there by changing what gets written down and where it gets captured, not by buying another agent layer to read what a tired seller typed on a Friday. The cheapest place to start is the channel that currently writes down nothing, and there is a founder's breakdown of pipeline built from a single event for anyone who wants to see what capturing it looks like in practice.

"You cannot coach a top decile you cannot see. If 47% of your revenue comes from 10% of your people and you cannot say what they do, you do not have a performance problem, you have a recording problem."
